HAND HYGIENE:Preventing Harmful Germs
A study published in BMJ, which coincides with the World Health Organization SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign on the 5 May 2012, reveals that the campaign played a significant role in reducing rates of some healthcare associated infections in hospitals across England and Wales.
The WHO's SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign is part of a worldwide effort to improve hand hygiene amongst healthcare workers, in order to prevent infections that are often life threatening.
Taking a cue from this for personal hygiene is vitally important in staying away from illnesses and diseases.
Hand Hygiene involves hand washing. This is recognized by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention as one of the most important ways of preventing germs from spreading.
Washing hands properly after using the toilet, changing nappies, handling animals and before and after handling food helps prevent the spread of various forms of gastroenteritis, some of which can cause serious health problems. Use soap and warm running water and wash hands for at least 10 seconds. Liquid soap is best.
